Ahead of World Water Day on Monday (22nd March), here are some stats and top tips from Mira Showers below to help the nation save more water at home,
Not only does saving water help with playing a part in benefitting the environment, but it can help save money too..
Water usage and wastage stats:
- A single person in the UK uses an average of 149 litres of water a day. This figure almost doubles for a two-person household. For a household of five, water usage increases to a whopping 523 litres per day1.
- 80% of Brits admit to having at least one water wasting habit2
- Each home loses 112 litres through leakage every day!3
- People in England will face significant water shortages by 2050 unless we save water fast 4
10 top tips from Mira Showers for saving water at home:
- Reduce food waste – Producing our food uses a lot of water, from meat and dairy products through to cereals and vegetables. UK households waste 4.5 million tonnes of food each year that could have been eaten. By reducing your food waste, not only will it help to save water, the average family with children could also save an incredible £700 each year too.
- Stack the dishwasher full – Settling a common debate, a dishwasher does use less water than hand washing, if used when full. In fact, it uses an incredible three to four times less water than if you were washing the same dishes by hand!
- If you can wait for that favourite t-shirt or jumper, save your washing until you have a full load – each load of laundry uses approximately 50 litres of water5! Doing one load not only uses less water than two but will also help save on energy usage too.
- Stop running the tap unnecessarily – A running tap uses up to nine litres of water every minute! So, turn it off whilst brushing your teeth, and if handwashing dishes fill a small bowl.
- Catch rainwater for indoor plants – plants will enjoy a soaking from rainwater rather than treated tap water. If there’s space, the average water butt stores about 200 litres of water. However, anything that’s available to catch water would help!
- Check for leaky taps – It might only seem like a small amount, but it all adds up. A dripping tap could be wasting up to 5,500 litres of water each year.
- Change your shower or showerhead – Eco-friendly showerheads can save up to 85% more water compared to a standard shower heads – they might limit the flow but it’s just as enjoyable. As well as your showerhead, upgrading your shower system can have a positive impact on your water consumption. Mira digital showers feature an eco pre-set which helps you to control your water usage at your fingertips.
- Spend less time in the shower – We surveyed the nation and discovered that women typically spend 8 minutes showering, and men spend 7 minutes, but Mira Showers recommends spending just 4 minutes showering to save water and money. If every home in the UK took one minute off their shower every day, we would save £215 million on our energy bills as a nation each year.
- Reduce your baths – The average bath uses significantly more water than the average shower (80 litres vs 60 litres) so by reducing your number of baths each week, and taking shorter than average showers, you could greatly reduce your water usage.
- Get a low flush toilet – Old-style single-flush toilets use 13 litres of water for each flush. Modern dual-flush toilets use just 6 litres for a full flush, or 4 litres for a reduced flush. If you can’t invest in a new toilet just yet, you can install a cistern displacement device to reduce the volume of water used for each flush. You should be able to get one from your water provider.
Mira Showers has a new app with a neat feature: precise water usage tracking. Think of it like a smart meter for water consumption. Being able to see precisely how much water you’re using may make you more conscious of it. You can also set timers on your shower with it.
